Chum Salmon

The Tiger Striped Salmon

Chum Salmon are the underdog of all the five Pacific Salmon. They begin their return in Late June and run through the end of July on the Togiak. They are a wonderful bi-catch fish and they are a ton of fun on twitchin Jigs, weighted purple clouser fly’s, and occasionally will hit top water as well.

Togiak River Chum Salmon, are some of the highest quality Chum’s in the world. More often than not, guests will catch Chum’s so bright that they mistake them as Sockeye or Silvers. Dime bright Togiak Chum’s make excellent smoked Salmon and when taken home fresh (not frozen) are excellent on the grill.

How We Target Togiak Chum Salmon

Peaking slightly later than the King Salmon, the chum salmon on the Togiak provide a wonderful opportunity for anglers who want to catch lots of fish. These vibrantly colored fish are often very willing to play on stripped or swung flies, marabou jigs, spinner, and even large diving plugs generally used for king salmon.

They are usually found staging in softer water or on the seams of soft and fast water. Chum Salmon can be observed travelling up river in pods Sockeye and Pinks. They are almost ALWAYS willing to bite.
